Killed Karabakh soldier awarded posthumously ‘for courage’ in repelling Azeri attack -

Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) President Bako Sahakyan signed a decree on “awarding posthumously the NKR Defense Army’s N division’s junior sergeant Armen Hovhannisyan for bravery shown during the defense of the NKR state border with the ‘For Courage’ medal.”

Hovhannisyan was killed in overnight combat action repelling an attack by Azeri commandos against Karabakh positions.

The NKR Defense Ministry’s press office reported that late on January 19 – early January 20 Armenian forces had to resort to active defenses to stop two simultaneous commando attacks attempted by Azeri forces in the northeastern (Jraberd) and southeastern (Korgan) directions near Karabakh.

“Spotting the actions of the Azeri sabotage groups in both directions the detachments of the NKR Defense Army switched to organized defenses and, inflicting considerable personnel and material losses on the enemy, threw it back to the original positions,” the NKR Defense Ministry said.

It added that during the exchange of fire junior sergeant Hovhannisyan “courageously executing the combat task was killed with an enemy bullet.”

An inquiry has reportedly been launched to establish the details of the incident. The NKR Defense Ministry has expressed its condolences to the family, friends and fellow servicemen of Hovhannisyan.
